  • Can't view PDFs in Blackboard? Missing a Plug-in? (Tuesday, August 30, 2011)
We are aware of the "Missing Plug-in" problem with viewing PDFs in Blackboard.  The problem is a conflict between your browser and the Adobe PDF Plug-in appears to only affect Mac users.  The issue appears in most browsers, including Safari 5.1 and Firefox 4, 5, and 6.  Blackboard has acknowledged the issue and chalks it up to browser compatibility with a fix coming in the near future.  In the meantime, here is a work around solution:

Solution 1: The Google Chrome browser is currently unaffected by this issue and loads PDFs as expected.  Mac users with this problem may choose to install Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome for use with Blackboard as a temporary fix.

Solution 2:  You can install a different PDF Plug-in (other than the Mac OSX default and the Adobe PDF plug in)  that seems to work with most browsers.  You can obtain this plugin from this site:  http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/.  Install the plugin on your computer and test with PDFs in Blackboard.

If you have any questions or need assistance with these work-arounds, please submit a support request to the CGCE Advanced Support Ticket System from the CGCE Student Portal - http://students.rowanu.com or from the Bb Help Center in your course (pick option 5).

    - A message from the CGCE Division of Online Services.
